The building site is now a hive of activity, the pilings are all in place and we can see the new school taking shape as the foundations are poured, the dry weather has certainly helped move things.
The very large red crane on the site is a distinct attraction and can be seen moving materials and digging machines from one part of the site to another. We have had viewing panels cut in to the hoardings in the playground so that the children can look at the work taking place and keep track of all of the changes.
Demolition work took a lot longer than expected as considerable time had to be spent breaking up the foundations of the old building. It seems that when the school was built in the 1960’s, tons and tons of concrete was poured in to fill the foundations.
As a consequence it took much longer than expected to dig out and break up and a specialised machine brought in to do the work!
Lots of internal work has been going on behind the scenes to enable the building work to progress. On 29 March 2016, demolition to the north part of the Albion building is scheduled to start. After demolition there will be a period of time sorting the debris for recycling before it can be removed from the site. We are hopeful that construction of the building can begin in the early summer.
All of the additional buildings adjoined to the Albion Building have now been demolished and the site is being prepared for foundation works. Independent heating systems are currently being installed in the classrooms in the Albion Building. When this work is finished, the final section of the ‘cut line’ will go in separating the front of the Albion building from our part and stripping out works will commence prior to demolition.
Lots of work has been taking place behind the scenes to prepare for the demolition of the front part of the Albion building. We will shortly be having a new heating system installed in to the Albion classrooms which will then make us fully self-contained.
We will then hand over the front of the site in full to the contractors. Today was the first day that our meals were cooked off-site and transported to Albion. The children responded brilliantly to the change and took it all in their stride! Each building has a new name, banners have been erected and children are visiting the buildings to ensure they know their way around school.
