The hallways were filled with wizards, hungry caterpillars, and more than a few bears wearing wellington boots as our school celebrated World Book Day in spectacular fashion on Thursday 6th March 2025!
Staff and pupils alike embraced the celebration with extraordinary enthusiasm, transforming our school into a living library of beloved characters. From the smallest nursery children dressed as the Wild Things to our Year 6 pupils sporting Harry Potter robes, the creativity on display was nothing short of magical.
I've never seen the children so excited about books,
beamed Rebecca, our literacy coordinator, dressed impressively as ‘Thing 1’ and doing cart-wheels!
They're not just talking about costumes—they're discussing favourite stories and swapping recommendations!
The day wasn't just about dressing up, though that certainly added to the festive atmosphere. Pupils participated in storytelling sessions, character quizzes, and even a book-themed treasure hunt that had them racing through the school library with unprecedented enthusiasm.
World Book Day's importance extends far beyond a single day of celebration. Established by UNESCO in 1995, this global event aims to promote reading, publishing, and copyright. For our school community, it represents something even more fundamental — igniting a lifelong love of reading in young minds.
In today's digital world, encouraging children to pick up physical books is more crucial than ever,
explained Deputy Headteacher Caroline, who delighted everyone by arriving as a ladybird.
Reading develops imagination, vocabulary, and empathy in ways that screen time simply cannot match.
The highlight of our celebration was undoubtedly the morning assembly, where pupils showcased their costumes to thunderous applause. The school hall echoed with laughter as teachers performed short scenes from beloved children's books.
As our World Book Day celebration came to a close, one thing was clear—stories had leaped from pages into hearts. The chatter about favourite characters and plot twists continued well into the day, suggesting that the real success of World Book Day lies not in the festivities themselves, but in the lasting enthusiasm for reading they inspire.
In the words of a young Year 3 pupil, dressed as the Gruffalo:
Books make pictures in your mind that are even better than TV!
With that kind of wisdom from our youngest readers, the future of literacy at our school looks brighter than ever.
