Year Four’s January residential at Sayers Croft.

Sayers Croft Outdoor Learning Centre is a beautiful residential site at the foot of the Surrey Hills. They have fifty six acres of woodlands, meadows, ponds and streams to explore, as well as a great range of adventure activities including:

  • wall climbing,
  • caving and
  • rope courses.

Their six dormitories, each with their own common room, make the ideal base for groups to plan and relax at either end of a busy day. Their team is dedicated to delivering tailored experiences that create lasting memories.

Year 4's Unforgettable Adventure at Sayers Croft Outdoor Learning Centre

Our Year 4 pupils have returned from three incredible days at Sayers Croft Outdoor Learning Centre, brimming with stories, newfound confidence, and a deeper appreciation for nature and teamwork. The residential trip proved to be a perfect blend of adventure, learning, and personal growth, with every child pushing their boundaries and discovering strengths they never knew they had..

Day One: Skills and Finding Direction

The adventure began with shelter building, where children worked in teams to construct weatherproof shelters using natural materials. This hands-on activity taught them practical problem-solving skills, the importance of planning, and how effective communication leads to success. There was genuine pride on every face as they stood back to admire their creations!

The afternoon brought the challenge of orienteering, where pupils learned to read maps and navigate their way around the beautiful grounds. This activity developed their spatial awareness, decision-making abilities, and built confidence as they discovered they could find their way independently in an unfamiliar environment.

Day Two: From Ponds to Peaks

After a nutritious breakfast that fuelled their energy for the day ahead, the children began with pond dipping, an activity that transformed our young learners into enthusiastic scientists. Armed with nets and identification charts, they discovered the hidden world of aquatic creatures, fostering curiosity about biodiversity and ecosystems while developing careful observation skills.

The Blindfolded Trail was perhaps one of the most powerful learning experiences. One partner, blindfolded, had to navigate a muddy obstacle course guided only by their partner's verbal instructions. This activity highlighted the critical importance of precise language, active listening, and trust. The children quickly learned that saying "go left a bit" wasn't nearly as helpful as "take two small steps to your left." It was communication skills in action.

Creativity flourished during the hazel frame building session, where children crafted their own frames and stretched delicate tissue paper across them. This activity combined fine motor skills with artistic expression, and the concentration on every face was a joy to witness.

The bouldering wall presented a different kind of challenge altogether. Children discovered that climbing isn't just about arm strength but requires core stability, flexibility, and mental determination. Every child who reached the top or even made it halfway showed incredible resilience, and those waiting their turn were the most supportive cheerleaders imaginable.

As darkness fell, everyone gathered around the campfire to share their experiences from the day. This reflective time allowed children to process their achievements, bond with their classmates, and practice speaking in front of others in a warm, supportive environment.

Day Three: Reaching New Heights

The final day brought the biggest physical and emotional challenge: the high ropes course. Suspended high above the ground, every child had to dig deep to find their courage. Whether they completed the entire course or took those first brave steps onto the wobbly bridge, each child demonstrated remarkable resilience and the willingness to face their fears. The cheers and encouragement from classmates below showed how much the group had grown together over just three days.

The trip concluded with compass navigation through the woodland nature trail. Applying the orienteering skills from Day One but now with the added challenge of using a compass, the children confidently found their way through the trail, ending their Sayers Croft adventure as capable, independent young explorers.

Beyond the Activities

While the activities themselves were thrilling, the real magic of Sayers Croft lay in what happened between the scheduled events. Children learned to manage their belongings, work through minor disagreements with friends, try new foods, and be away from home, all while surrounded by the beauty of nature. They returned not just with memories, but with greater independence, stronger friendships, and the confidence that comes from discovering they're braver than they thought.

We are incredibly proud of every Year 4 pupil who participated in this residential trip. The growth we witnessed in just three days was remarkable, and we know these experiences and lessons will stay with them for years to come.

Thank you to our Albion staff and all the staff at Sayers Croft for providing such an enriching and memorable experience for our children.
